What's up with Shiptrak?

by Soggy Paws USA » Sat Nov 30, 2013 8:03 am

I've noticed in the last few weeks that Shiptrak seems to be down. All I get is a tab labelled "Shiptrak v3.1", a blank page with "Log Entries" at the bottom. I have tried with both Chrome and IE 8, with same results.

Anyone know what's up? This is/was my favorite place for keeping tabs on where my friends are right now.

I just tried it. It shows recent reports, BUT, many many of the older points no longer show up. Seems like a LOT of history went away.

Really? Does it work with this link? Just making sure we're talking about the same thing.

http://shiptrak.org/?callsign=KG4SNA&filter=60

I have been tracking myself and friends for years with Shiptrak, and all I'm getting is a blank screen.

I tried JUST shiptrak.org on my IE (same XP computer) and there was an error indication at the bottom of the browser. When I clicked on the error indicator, here's what popped up:

Webpage error details

I will try it today with a completely different computer with W7 and a more modern version of IE. But I've never had problems with it on this computer (until last couple of weeks).

And there isn't any contact info showing to report any problems...

I also tried with Firefox on my computer and IE 10 on a nearly brand new Windows 7 computer, with a completely different anti-virus solution. Same result on all.

The tab says ShipTrak v3.1, the screen is completely blank except for "Show Log Entries" in a black box in the lower left corner with the typical link to toggle the display of the log entries. Clicking the link doesn't do anything. Hitting refresh causes a brief "waiting for shiptrak.org" in the browser status bar, and then the same blank screen.

If I right click and "view source" on the page, there is some javascript there invoking the google map API and some .js files that probably load the data.

If anyone can get me contact info off the shiptrak website, I'd be happy to open up a dialog with them directly to report the issue.

Thanks
Sherry

Soggy--

For what it's worth, with the link you included (http://shiptrak.org/?callsign=KG4SNA&filter=60) I get a world map with a single maptack at the mouth of the Amazon. Firefox 25.0.1 on XP.

Larry,

Thanks for your feedback, it's helpful. I finally checked my version of Firefox and updated from v12 to v25.0.1 (!!) (I don't use it very often!). And as part of that got a bunch of Java warnings and updated from whatever version I had to the latest, and uninstalled 3 old versions.

The shiptrak map now working in Firefox, pretty much as normal. But in spite up fooling around with Chrome, no joy at all with Chrome (even after an update, reboot, clearing cache, etc etc). IE 8 also doesn't work.

I also went to my sister's nearly brand new Dell computer running Win 7, and tried calling up shiptrak.org on IE 10. Still no joy.

But since I finally got the Shiptrak page up on Firefox, I got the contact email and I have emailed that person with a screen shot and details of my issues. I'll post back here if/when I hear back from them.

Thanks for your help!

Here's what I got back from the Shiptrak support team:

Hi Sherry...

Yup, we're working on it. Google has changed some things so we have to update the scripts..

Thanks...

So, it's a known issue. Hopefully they'll get it resolved soon.

In the meantime, use a recent version of Firefox for your Shiptrak queries, and it will work.

I'm using a MacBok Pro with Safari - and have the same problem. I get a blank screen. Some incompatibility has crept in over the past few months. Hopefully the Shiptrak folks will sort it out.
