GRIB File Source

by Capt Major » Wed Feb 08, 2017 9:15 pm

Does anyone have or know of a free GRIB file internet source that includes wind and waves?

I know you can get a GRIB file from NOAA, but you have to figure out the mysteries of accessing, identifying and downloading the selected data. I ain't that smart or patient.

gribot@globalmarinenet.net offers a free file that has to be extracted and only provides wind vectors on a 50km grid density.

So any help in finding real GRIB (.grb) files would be greatly appreciated.

Zygrib, gives all of this data and can be imported into OpenCPN, to view with your charts.

How about a link to ocean currents? I can only find pay services.

Thanks!

If you use OpenCPN you can download the normal GFS weather gribs as well as RTOFS current gribs via the built in Grib plugin and your normal email program. These files are all downloaded from Saildocs.
You don't need OpenCPN, but it makes it so much easier than composing your own emails with the strict Saildocs syntax.

A big +10 for Saildocs, though we use the (free) ViewFax program that comes with SailMail to oreder & display the GRIBs. You can download the Viewfax and Sailmail programs from https://sailmail.com/category/downloads/. Sailmail service has an annual fee, but the rest (including the software) is free (and very reliable).
