who insures your boat

by Liberty » Tue Oct 22, 2013 12:42 pm

I have been with bluewater for 6 years. communications have always been very difficult but last year and this year are almost more than i can take. and I have a substantial premium increase this year for exactly the same coverage as last year and cannot get an explanation. I need to make a change. I will be in El Salvador in March, down through the Panama Canal over Christmas 2014 and then probably in the warm water or back up in the Southern US for a while before heading to Europe. We do not cruise full time. Who are you insured by and are you happy with them?

We are insured by Markel
Broker is IMIS and the policy is called the "Jackline"
One major claim where the boat next to us caught fire
We think they were very fair
Premium increases have been 2-3% per year

IMIS as we cruised all through Mexico including during hurricane season.
As a broker, IMIS set us up with a policy from Makrel.

IMIS with Markel as underwriter! Have been with them since returning from the Med in 2007. Amazing service on a claim we made in 2009.

Strongly recommend the Jackline policy for cruisers.

IMIS and Markel for years now. We were attracted to the policy by its feature set, its treatment of double-handers and direct knowledge of how they handled three lightning claims.

Mariners General (broker in Newport Cal and other places), policy is Seaworthy, a Berkshire company. They have a good record of pay outs for a number of friends lightening strikes and groundings.

I'm very happy with the policy and service from Rachel Sloan at IMIS.
My insurance for last 7 years has been, IMIS "Jackline Policy" (W/ full "named storm" coverage), underwritten by Markel.

Another IMIS client. At least until I sold the boat. Al and Rachel are great. We had a Jackline policy also with named storm coverage for the last few years.

We are also happy with our Markel policy with IMIS. We HAD insured with others until we began cruising in the Med when US insurers were not competitive. Once there we LOVED Pantaneus and recommend them for when you cruise there. We know of no European company who will underwrite US flagged boats in North America, however so we became IMIS customers on our return in 2006. One of the reasons, I believe that IMIS is so popular here is that they design policies FOR cruisers. You can get the equivalent of a "homeowner's" policy when your boast IS your home and I believe they WILL cover you in the places you want to cruise. Can't comment on claims as we have not yet had one.

IMIS has been good to us. We originally had a Jackline policy, but they have a quota for boats laying up in Grenada, so IMIS switched us to Seaworthy. No claims (happy to say!), but premiums seem fair and haven't gone up appreciably.
