Fishing Webinar

SSCA Equipment Series: Fishing
Seven Seas Cruising Association announces a new series of webinars under the banner of the Seven Seas University that focuses on equipment of interest to cruising sailors.  This first webinar interviews and presents “Adventureman Dan” who is a frequent contributor to the SSCA Facebook page with his posts about his spearfishing adventures around the world. Dan Byrne will describe the spearfishing equipment he uses, his sustainable fishing methods (he pretty much subsists on the fish he catches, feeding himself, his crew and cruising neighbors with any excess) and how to interact with pelagic species.

Dan recently became a member of Seven Seas Cruising Association and credits other members for their advice and encouragement for his lifestyle onboard.  Visit Adventureman Dan’s website at www.adventuremandan.life., listen to his podcasts and watch his videos. Enjoy the webinar.

When: February 12, 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Topic: SSCA Equipment Series: Fishing
Fee:  Free to SSCA Members, $5.00 for Non-Members

After registering, you will receive an initial registration confirmation and then 24-48 hours before the webinar you will receive an email with a link to access the live presentation.  On-demand viewing will also be available for a limited time after the live event for registered attendees.

About the Presenter

Dan is a young adventurer with an "old soul", slowly sailing around the world on his 1984 Beneteau Idylle 11.5m sloop rigged sailboat.  Adventureman Dan is his persona of a pure, unrestricted, unadulterated and uncompromising spirit to journey out into the world, collecting experiences and stories to share with the world.

In 2015, Dan found his life at a major crossroads. Completely confused and unsure what direction he was going or why, he decided to forge his own path. With only the desire for adventure as his motivation, a GoPro attached to his speargun and a Nikon camera slung over his back, Dan set out for an around the world adventure.

That particular adventure quickly turned into an “Around the World Spearfishing Tour”.  And, like every single adventure that would follow, did not go according to plan. What was supposed to be 180 days turned into:

  • 377 days traveling Westward around the world
  • Traveling more than 55,000 mi+ /88,000 km+ zig zagging Westward around the globe
  • Passed 9 “random” explosive particle security checks and “failed” 1
  • Dove with 50+ legendary divers off 20+ boats
  • Took 20 flights and 37 buses
  • Paid and published for his photos and stories in several magazines
  • Consumed over one hundred pounds of raw fish and cooked fish he'd spearfished
  • Speared 30+ new species with many overall personal bests
  • Freedove with 2 more Great Whites

Months before flying back to end that tour, Dan realized he was forever changed. He could not look at the world the same way. Dan's perception of what was normal no longer resembled anything he had known before. But, he knew what fulfilled him. So months before returning to the US, Dan began working on the next adventure. He took an RV from San Diego to Alaska during which he speared the world record King Salmon! After that, he realized his next calling. To sail around the world--exploring, absorbing new cultures and spearfishing to sustain himself, while teaching others to do the same.
